Kentucky has 3 planting zones 6b, 7a, and 7b according to the USDA’s plant hardiness zone classification.
Zone 6b covers the northern regions, Zone 7a dominates most of the state, including major cities such as Louisville and Lexington. Zone 7b, the warmest, is found in the southernmost areas.
You can find your Kentucky planting zone by using our ZIP code tool or the Kentucky city planting zone map, given below. Both tools will show your exact USDA growing zone.

Kentucky’s planting zones influence on plants?
The planting zones in Kentucky (6b, 7a, and 7b) significantly influence plant selection by determining which species can survive and thrive in each area’s climate conditions. Growing zone are directly influenced by factors like:
- Winter hardiness: Plants must withstand minimum temperatures specific to each zone.
- Growing season length: Affects the time available for plants to mature and produce flowers or fruit.
- Heat tolerance: Important for plants to survive summer temperatures in warmer zones.
- Soil conditions: Vary across zones, impacting plant growth and health.
