This zone includes some of the highest elevations in Garrett County.

2. Zone 6a

This zone have cities such as Friendsville, Frostburg, Grantsville, and Oakland, primarily located in Garrett and Allegany counties.

3. Zone 6b

The dark blue color area on our map above, Zone 6b covers a narrow band across western Maryland. With average annual minimum temperatures between -5°F and 0°F (-20.6°C to -17.8°C), this zone includes cities like Barton, Bloomington, Eckhart Mines, Midland, and Westernport. It represents a transition between the colder mountain regions and the milder central parts of the state.

4. Zone 7a

The average annual minimum temperatures in this zone range from 0°F to 5°F (-17.8°C to -15°C). Some of the key cities in this zone include Frederick, Hagerstown, Westminster, and parts of Baltimore County. It covers much of the Piedmont region and the northern part of the Eastern Shore.

It’s the most populous zone in the state, covering diverse landscapes from urban areas to rural farmlands.

6. Zone 8a

The warmest zone in Maryland, 8a, is shown in light green color on our map and covers the southern tip of the state and areas along the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast. Average annual minimum temperatures in this zone range from 10°F to 15°F (-12.2°C to -9.4°C). Some of the cities and regions in this zone include Ocean City, parts of St. Mary’s County, and southern portions of the Eastern Shore.
